How Roaming Royalty Outsourced Their WordPress Design

Today I have another stellar guest post by Todd Dunnigam from Roaming Royalty. Todd is a BandWPThemes member and today he sent me an email stating that he did some outsourcing to tweak the theme. Friggin awesome I thought. So he sent over this step-by-step process for using oDesk to outsource some of your web and WordPress work.

How would you like an assistant, or even a team of assistants that do amazing work for you at a low price and only when you need it?

Do what all the Fortune 500 companies have been doing for years, outsource it. There are web designers, graphics people, tech nerds and every other kind of skilled person just waiting to work for you. Sounds great, and (in theory) it’s as easy as going to a website and sending out an e-mail with your job listing, you can go back to making music while some of this other tedious stuff gets done by someone else.

OK how easy is it really?

That’s what I set out to discover when I wanted to change up my WordPress site (built on BandWPThemes). I know a little html, a little css, I think the term is, I know enough to be dangerous, and the changes I wanted to make were beyond me. I’d read about outsourcing and fortunately I had a friend who was doing it so he was able to help me through the process. He recommended odesk.com ’cause he had tried some others and liked them best, and through odesk.com he had assembled a team of people from all over the world that he was really happy with.

step 1: sign up and post your job

Sign up is pretty easy, you have to fill out the usual information and you need to put a credit card on file which will be used to pay the people you hire. Next you’ll be asked if you’d like to post a job which takes you to a basic text editor where you describe the job you have.

Once the job is listed, people will start applying for your job. I put out an ad asking for a simple WordPress update and within about 8 hours I had 30 people apply for the job. Applicants came from all over the world. Some were part of big companies and some were independent contractors and they ranged in price from $3.33 per hour to over $30 per hour. I looked at some of the candidates and I was ready for the next step, but I hit a snag.

Odesk charges 2 small amounts to your credit card which you then find on your statement and you then go back to the website and plug in those amounts to verify your card. This is pretty common practice but the process took 3 days. When you’re used to things happening instantaneously, 3 days seemed insufferably slow.

Step 2: interview and hire someone

Out of the roughly 50 answers I got back I chose to interview 4 people. Odesk does a cool thing by matching keywords in your post to keywords in an applicants listing so you get a compatibility rating. Here’s a quick example listing:

I chose the 4 applicants based on 4 different criteria.

  • the lowest price
  • one recommended by my friend
  • one guy who was fairly new to the site and had almost no jobs, I figured he’d be hungry to do a good job
  • one who was pretty expensive but had lot’s of jobs and impeccable feedback

A quick note to potential job seekers on these sites: Look at Irnya’s headline in the pic above, that got my attention ’cause it stood out from all the other headlines, her pic didn’t hurt either.

Step 3: Put your new employee to work

So I hired my 3rd option, the guy with no track record or jobs, he was also cheap at $5.00 an hour. Imran Ali Shah contacted me and we exchanged a couple of e-mails. I did my best to explain to him what I was after, and included many links to other sites that had examples of what I wanted. I also asked him about the time frame and he said he could have it done over a weekend.

So when the weekend came around I went to our site and saw a couple of changes and I was pretty excited, Imran Ali Shah, was on the job! By the time the weekend was over, he had started to make a couple of the changes we had talked about and then seemed to abandon the project. I hit him up to see how it was going and I received a bill, granted it was only for $5.00 and some legit changes had been made but not even close to what I was thinking was going to happen.

Strike one. Lesson learned. The cheapest guy probably isn’t the best.

Step 4: Hire someone else.

So I went back and this time I hired Iryna, pictured in the ad above, she was more expensive but her feedback was stellar. Iryna contacted me within minutes of hiring her and after we had a couple of details worked out she said she would start in 30 minutes. My plans for that day were taking the kids to the waterpark so I wasn’t going to be near a computer all day, but I sent her the same instructions I had sent the previous applicant and told her to go for it. For the rest of the day I occasionally picked up my phone and e-mailed answers to any questions Iryna had, but within a few hours I had the changes I wanted made to my website for less than $40.

Step 5: Enjoy your life

I can’t tell you how happy I was spending a day in the sun with the kids vs. pouring over a css manual trying figure out WTF is wrong with my site. 40 bucks? Totally worth it. So all in all it wasn’t perfectly smooth, but now that I have Iryna I can go back to her whenever, she’s part of my team. Also, good people tend to know other good people so when I asked Iryna if she did graphic design, she said ‘no’ but she knew another person who also turned out to be fabulous. So go write a song, or do some surfing or spend some quality time with the family and leave the work to someone else.

How To Really Get Your Music On Blogs

GETTING YOUR MUSIC ON BLOGS

Having been recently popped out of the Penn State toaster, Chris Bracco has decided to serve up his Business Management skills by creating a comprehensive play-by-play handbook to help DIY musicians learn how to effectively promote their music in the world of blogs. His handbook is completely free and is available as an e-book online in PDF form of 22 pages.

The handbook in its original form was first established on a blog as a series of updated posts, but now Chris has compiled his blog into one easy to read anecdote titled, “HOW TO REALLY GET YOUR MUSIC ON BLOGS.” The e-book focuses on how to creatively get blog managers on board and feature one’s music on their site. Serving as a mentor to non-expert networkers, Chris Bracco charitably offers his tricks of the trade on several key marketing issues to aid musicians with sharpening their marketing publicity.

DEFINE YOURSELF

Chris’s e-book follows a very organized and simple outline of ideas and strategies that Chris creates through a business and marketing approach. Chris’s knowledge of the DOs and DON’Ts of the industry is very transparent and can be helpful for all skill levels of networking experience. Chris starts off his marketing spreadsheet by suggesting that the musician be able to list and define different characteristics about their music such as:

  • Personality
  • Hometown
  • (sub) Genre
  • Lifestyle & Interests
  • Fan Demographic

FINDING YOUR ADVANTAGE POINT(S)

All these categories, he suggests, will help the musician better understand what to search for in blogs and where they can reach out to like-minded bloggers; ultimately, producing a victory of being featured on a blog that will successfully promote the band/individual’s music. Chris encourages musicians to figure out how their personalities reflect diversity and then encourages them to apply their diverse personality traits to diverse (“non-music) blogs which can prove to be just as effective as music blogs because similar interests are there and waiting to be connected.

“HOW TO REALLY GET YOUR MUSIC ON BLOGS” attempts to compile various networking tools that will help you assist your ability to impact the music blogging world. His example of how this type of networking can be linked reads as:

If, for example, you enjoy exercising regularly, it would be a great idea to search for blogs related to staying fit. Maybe you can present the blogger with the idea of writing a post about listening to music while working out, and ask that your music be mentioned in the post. Targeting location-specific blogs is useful, too

Some crucial references that Chris suggests throughout his guide include: Google blog search, The Hype Machine, Captain Crawl, and Elbo.ws – all of which are can lend a helpful hand in generating music with a similar buzz.

IT’S A BLOG EAT BLOG WORLD!

Since the blogging world is always needing new material and rapidly becoming buzz-worthy, Chris emphasizes the importance of being keen enough to target blogs that appropriately match up with the characteristics (listed above) of your music so that the musician has a better chance and reason why the blog host should feature them on their site.

It’s a blog eat blog world out there and it’s not always as easy as it looks and you might not succeed your first couple of hits which is why Chris underlines the important of persistence. Musicians have to been to be persistent with showing their originality and following up with communicating their creative desires.

All in all, Chris Bracco’s resource “HOW TO REALLY GET YOUR MUSIC ON BLOGS” provides DIY musicians with a well-constructed, detailed, and easy to apply perspective on how they should pursue featuring their music on the buzz-worthy blogs they prefer and should definitely be consulted by any musician entering the blogosphere!

The Pain And The Progress With BandWPThemes

Damn.

Thank you guys! I wanted to start this by thanking everyone for hanging out and being a part of the BandWPThemes launch. It has been a crazy week for me and my team and I am so appreciative of your patience, your input and your action. There are at least 10 sites now live collecting fans made on the BandWPThemes platform and another 20 or so that will be ready to go any day now.

So let’s talk about some of the pain and the progress and the future of BandWPThemes.

First, the ease of use. Personally I take for granted how easy and user-friendly WordPress is. I have been using it for 2+ years and would really not use another platform to build any type of site for really any kind of business I would find myself creating. With that said, if you have never created a website outside of your Myspace profile and a few other inside the box social networking pages – WordPress can be confusing as shit.

First you need a domain and hosting. And you need to make sure the domain talks to the hosting company. Then you need to install WordPress. Then you need to install the theme. Then customize it.

Those are a few more steps than you might have thought you were getting into (don’t worry though, we got you – video walk throughs).

Customization

The customization of BandWPThemes is hopefully quite easy. The custom dash makes it easy to insert your music player and Twitter code, Google Analytics to track site statistics and insert a header image.

Some people have said you can do this stuff by customizing some free themes. Totally true. You can. But for musicians that have never used WordPress and don’t want to customize the CSS or add some plugins to their site, we made it easy and 1-click.

Others have said that all the sites will kinda look the same with the gray background and yellow titles. Well if we sold like a million of these (which I would love to do) that may be the case. But to ensure that we give you some options, we are working on version 1.2 right now that will have some other color combos for you to use. All in all, there should be 5 or 6 in the next release (hopefully will be released soon).

Anyone who grabs the theme will get free updates for life.

Aweber vs. FanBridge vs. Reverbnation

Many people who were thinking of grabbing the theme and some that got it were worried that they would have to switch to Aweber. While it is true that we both endorse Aweber and are affiliates for Aweber, you can use whatever email program you want.

The built it “newsletter widget” however will only work with Aweber at this point in time. To use Reverb or FanBridge, simply grab an HTML widget, drag it into the sidebar and insert the code they give you to embed a form (we got you covered on this as well, loading those videos up today).

There is one live example of this up now, which I will show you in a second.

Who The Theme Is For (And Not For)

While we want to say “everybody” we all know that is not true. The theme is dope. I like it and stand by it as a great way to get started with WordPress and learning this content management system and engaging with your fans. But…

The theme is NOT for musicians that are OCD about their designs. The theme is just a shell and if you are expecting it to look like something its not, well it won’t. Look for a designer or another premium theme that has more flexibility.

The theme perfect for the musician that wants to take control of their band’s online presence and needs a place to start. The best and most overlooked part of BandWPThemes is that we offer insane support, training videos and a forum that is really amped about the speed in which we answer questions and issues.

In fact, Roaming Royalty wrote a post on their new site that said BandWPThemes Rules! In it he goes on to explain:

I made this blog look the way it does by downloading a theme from BandWPthemes.com. Performing the install and getting everything done was not quite as easy as I had hoped, although the issues seemed to stem from WordPress and Go Daddy, there were no problems with the theme itself.

Even though I struggled a bit getting the page the way I wanted, Greg and Andrew from BandWPthemes got back to me right away and were so very helpful and, above all, they actually seemed to care a lot that I got my site going fast and was happy with my purchase. The computer world is complicated and there are many variables that can make every system act just a little different, thankfully these guys did not leave me high and dry when things were a little screwy for me, they also didn’t just shift blame to WP or Go Daddy and leave me hanging.

Not many theme creators and “internet marketers” would go this extra mile to ensure that a $27 or $37 purchase made the customer totally happy. Point for the good guys.

Some Live Examples

So let’s see what some of the bands and musicians have created over the past week. The first is from Adam Hoek, who you might remember from his guest post on Headliner.fm a few weeks back. Adam needed an upgrade to his existing WordPress site and got his BandWPTheme up on Monday, just hours after he purchased.

AdamHoek.com

Next up is Swedish Brilliance. They wanted to integrate ReverbNation into the theme, from its FanReach email collector to the player. They actually got it all going before I could shoot the install videos on how to make it all work. Then they were super awesome and wrote a forum thread on how to make it happen (bands helping bands).

Swedish Brilliance

The last one I wanted to showcase today was from Roaming Royalty, who after a few tech glitches and some help from our team, got his site up in about 2 days (yes, that’s more than 12 minutes, but to be fair, I knew the theme, knew its limits and had already resized images, etc – who would have wanted to watch a 2-3 hour video!)

My Friday Bribe To Take Some Action

It’s Friday and it’s been a bonkers week. Plus we were competing with Apple on Monday (I know, our theme is almost as cool as the new iPhone). The fast action bonuses went fast and that was awesome for us (bad if you take a long time to decide on things).

So here is what I am going to do. Anyone that grabs the theme from now till Sunday at 11:59pm I am going to hook you up with No Limit Networking. We gave 20 of them away and have heard some really cool things and think it might help you develop some content for your new WordPress site. Here’s what one member said about No Limit Networking:

I got into No Limit Networking and I ate that whole thing up today in 1 sitting. nice stuff! Really opened my eyes to how I should be expanding my people circle.

Just grab the Platinum version (which is going up to $47 on Monday) and I’ll know to shoot you the bonuses.

Cool? Cool.

Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing more of your sites over the weekend.

Get Your WordPress On! BandWPThemes Is Live.

Wow, it ‘s already Monday afternoon and I’m just getting to this blog post. Today is launch day if you have been reading for the past week. We opened to our early bird list at 10am or so and sold out of our 1st round of bonuses pretty quickly.

Then came a brief registration snafu. Yea, it happens. Even when you test and plan.

Anyway, the theme is now live. I wanted to throw out a couple of quick notes:

  • There are 2 levels of BandWPThemes Membership – Indie and Platinum
  • Indie is just the theme with very minimal support for $27
  • Platinum comes with a ton of support as well as membership with a support forum, WP hack videos, marketing training vids and more. It rolls out for $37
  • This is the cheapest product I think I have ever rolled out, but may be the most beneficial
  • There are still some bonuses for fast movers - you can scope them out here.

That’s really it. If you want to see the theme in action, we posted some killer stuff last week. If you think BandWPThemes can help you out, I encourage you to grab it. If it’s not for you, no worries, we will be back to regular posting tomorrow. In fact Zach will be rocking his comeback post on Creative Commons licensing.

We will have some case studies and more bands for you to look at that are using the platform as the week rolls on.

Anyway, see you all inside of BandWPThemes and thanks for making GYRS kick ass. This is a really dope community.
