And let's be honest, it's hard enough coming up with valid stuff on one site without having concoct material for five. The site should be the core, with the other services as funnels towards the site. Facebook can be run like a website, but there are two main drawbacks: flexibility and the fact that they can close you down in the blink of an eye (just happened to a friend of mine).

Eric, a good birthday post man! You've stated one of the most important things that most people in life get lost to. It doesn't matter what the vehicle is (twitter, facebook...etc), what matters is are you delivering something of value to a core audience that somehow is adding something to their life.

Without building a brand (website) online, these networks don't mean crap, especially if you gain fans on them but that never converts to them coming to your website and actually getting to know more about you and your business/art.

We too often get distracted by all the "tools" instead of understanding the framework for success. I think this is both a timely and timeless message you've conveyed, so thanks!!!

Effective and engaging communication with a hungry audience that is based around relationship and trust is where it's at. Musicians have got to stop broadcasting all their gigs, downloads and other self-related things and go give something tangibly valuable to an audience first. Just because someone 'liked' you, doesn't mean they always want to hear about every show you're doing, etc.

Okay, guess I better stop before I get on a rant :-). Thanks again.

Eric! I have found my social networking soul mate. Thank you!
FB and Twitter is not geared towards marketing music. It's a great tool for the toolbox to create a network, and communicate with fans, hang out and perhaps sell some Cd's and tickets to shows. (if you're lucky) Most people on FB are voyeurs not people who take action.

I think musicians are relying way too much on FB and Twitter.

A musicians website combined with their fans are the best marketing tools. Yes must have a blog on the website that you draw your FB fans to, get email addresses and communicate in a more human/creative way. an FB "like" is not a fan. An email address is a fan, they have committed to you by handing over their most private contact information. They are saying "yes please, I want to know everything about you, what you are selling, giving away and where you will be." So this means, you need to take the time to have compelling, intimate, creative moments with your fans via your blog and emails.

It will always be about the MUSIC and fans who love what you do, that's what artists should be focused on... that's what makes a fan, they either love your music or they don't. If they do... they join your email list, spread the word for you and bring friends to your show. In my book, word of mouth will always be the #1 marketing tool for a band. Figure out how to deploy your die hard fans.

The music, don't forget the music!

@TMRadio101...that amazes me too! I've worked with so many bands who hired me to set up or customize their profiles, newsletters, etc. but they don't even have a website. I always use the analogy that, while Twitter and Facebook and MySpace may be good places to hang out, you still need a website to call "home."

Very good article.. I agree with all of it.. I also wanted to say that I hate when an Artist or band doesnt even have their own website instead they use their facebook, tumblr or worse yet, myspace page. All these social media options make them feel like they dont need their own website which as you covered in this article is pretty much career suicide.. Again great article!!
